Without voltage, we wouldn’t be able to charge our smartphones, power our televisions, or enjoy a hot cup of coffee from our automatic coffee machines.įurthermore, voltage plays a crucial role in the field of electronics. It flows through the electrical grid, delivering power to our homes and appliances. From the moment we wake up and turn on the lights, voltage is already hard at work. Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s take a closer look at how voltage influences our daily lives. Voltage is the electric potential difference between two points in a circuit. It may sound complex, but think of it as a way to quantify the amount of electrical pressure at a specific point in a circuit. One volt is equal to one joule of energy per coulomb of charge. Well, the unit of measurement for voltage is the volt, named after the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta who invented the voltaic pile, a battery prototype. Now, you might be wondering how voltage is measured. The greater the voltage, the greater the push on the electrons, and the stronger the current that flows. Think of voltage as the force that motivates electrons to move through a wire, much like water flowing down a stream due to gravity. It is often referred to as the “push” that drives electric current. But what exactly is voltage? Let’s dive into the world of electricity and explore the fascinating phenomenon of voltage.Īt its core, voltage can be defined as the electric potential difference between two points in a circuit.
